Vasant Panchami

Vasant Panchami, also called Saraswati Puja in honor of the Hindu goddess Saraswati, is a festival that marks the preparation for the arrival of spring. The festival is celebrated by people of Dharmic religions in the South Asian countries in different ways depending on the region. Vasant Panchami also marks the start of preparation for Holika and Holi, which take place forty days later. The Vasant Utsava (festival) on Panchami is celebrated forty days before spring, because any season's transition period is 40 days, and after that, the season comes into full bloom.

A pivotal figure in India's freedom movement, Netaji is considered by many as one of the greatest leaders ever born. To commemorate his contribution to India's struggle for independence, every year on 23rd January, Subhas Chandra Bose's birthday is celebrated across various parts of the country. In 2022, Subhas Chandra Bose Jayanti falls on Thursday. It will mark his 125th birth anniversary.

Indian Army Day

Army Day is celebrated on 15 January every year in India, in recognition of Field Marshal Kodandera M. Cariappa's (then a Lieutenant General) taking over as the first Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army from General Fransis Bucher, the last British Commander-in-Chief of India, on 15 January 1949. Makar Sankranti

Makar Sankranti is the first major festival to be celebrated in India and usually takes place in January, this year the festival will be celebrated on January 14. Makar Sankranti is a major harvest festival celebrated by Hindus across India, however different states celebrated the festival under different names, traditions and festivities. Makar Sankranti marks the end of winter as well as the beginning of longer days on account of the sun's northward journey, this period is also known as Uttarayan on this account and is considered to be very auspicious.

Foundation Day, 21 January

On 21 January 1972, the states of Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya become full-fledged states under the North Eastern Region (Re-Organization) Act 1971.

In 1949, Manipur and Tripura states was granted the status of Union Territories. Nagaland granted statehood on December 1 1963. According to the sixth schedule of the Indian constitution, within Assam, Meghalaya was made an autonomous state through Assam Re-organization (Meghalaya) Act 1969.
